Students in ME senior lecturer Gloria Starns’ Field Engineering: Human-Centered Designed Concepts course (ME:402X) traveled to Nicaragua in the summer of 2017 where they worked with the non-profit Emerging Opportunities for Sustainability (founded by ME graduate Wes Meier) to develop inexpensive, environmentally-friendly stoves. ME sophomore Marisa Dizonno discusses her experience.
Second-year Civil Engineering undergraduate students become Engineering Contractors for a week on the innovative Constructionarium field trip and produce scale versions of existing structures. The student teams are responsible for the planning, budgeting, implementation and decision-making on the projects, with Waterman engineers acting as the design engineers and clients and Laing O'Rourke supervising the construction work as well as providing all materials, plant and equipment. Aeronautical Engineering Students take part in a study trip to Greece. They visit the premises of the Hellenic Aerospace Industry, where they are shown the complete life cycle of a typical aerospace industry project. The students then visited the neighbouring Tanagra Air Force Base to see the operational part of an aerospace project. Finally, to enhance student's cultural exposure, they visited Mikines (UNESCO world heritage monument) and Epidavros. This video provides details of the first two steps of the traditional four-step travel demand model: (1) trip generation; and (2) trip distribution. Under trip distribution, three methods for estimating the number of trips generated by a specific area or development type are covered. These methods include: (a) trip rates; (b) cross-classification; and (c) regression models. For trip distribution, the Gravity model is introduced, which is the most commonly applied method for estimating inter- and intra-zonal trips based on travel times.
